About Mura Wellness

Why this exists

Mura Wellness was founded in Nairobi by Hannah Nyambura Murai, because there was nowhere to send people who needed help but were not in crisis — and nowhere affordable to send the ones who were.

In Kenya there is approximately one psychiatrist for every half a million people. Most counties have no inpatient psychiatric facility at all. A single therapy session in Nairobi costs more than a great many families spend on food in a week.

So people manage. They manage by not sleeping, by working harder, by praying about it and hoping that is enough, by drinking, by going quiet. They manage until they cannot, and then it becomes an emergency, and emergencies are far more expensive and far more dangerous than the conversation that could have happened two years earlier.

Mura Wellness exists to widen the front door. Not everyone who is struggling needs a psychiatrist. Some need a therapist. Some need a trained listener for an hour. Some need a walk in Karura with people who understand. Some need a journal and a language for what is happening to them. And some, at two in the morning, just need something to answer.

Every one of those is a legitimate form of help, and we would rather someone start at the easiest door than never come in at all.

Mission

To make mental health support accessible, affordable and unashamed for every Kenyan — through professional therapy, trained listeners, community and everyday tools.

Vision

A Kenya where asking for help with your mind is as ordinary as asking for help with your body, and where the cost of it never decides who gets better.

Values

  • Dignity first. Nobody explains themselves to get help here.
  • Honest, not soothing. We would rather tell you the truth gently than tell you what you want to hear.
  • Confidentiality is absolute, with the single exception of immediate risk to life.
  • Faith is welcome, never required.
  • Nobody is turned away for money. Ask, and we will find a way.
