Emergency contacts

If you or someone else is in danger right now

These are free or low-cost and staffed by people trained for exactly this. You do not need to be sure it is "bad enough" to call.

If you are with someone in crisis

  • Stay. Do not leave them alone, and do not make them explain themselves.
  • Ask directly. "Are you thinking about ending your life?" Asking does not plant the idea β€” it gives permission to answer honestly.
  • Remove means where you safely can β€” medication, weapons, keys.
  • Call one of the numbers above together, or take them to the nearest emergency department.
  • Do not promise secrecy. Keeping them alive matters more than keeping the confidence.
