Volunteer

Give what you actually have

Not everyone can donate money. Some of the most valuable things people have given us were four hours on a Saturday, a camera, or a willingness to make tea and not ask questions.

Seven ways to help

The process

What happens after you apply

Application

The form below. Takes about five minutes, and there is no CV required.

Conversation

A 30-minute chat within two weeks. Informal — mostly about what you want from it.

Training

Everyone does safeguarding and confidentiality. Listeners do a further 80 hours.

Start

Paired with an experienced volunteer for your first three sessions or events.

Two honest things before you apply

This work will touch your own material. People volunteer in mental health because something happened to them, and that is a good reason — but sitting with other people's pain will occasionally put you back in contact with your own. We provide supervision for this, and we would rather you knew it up front.

We ask for a real commitment. Six months minimum, roughly four hours a month. Trust is the whole product here, and it does not survive a rotating cast of volunteers who disappear after three weeks.

If you are currently in the acute phase of your own crisis, please come as a member first. The door stays open — volunteer later, when it will not cost you.
